When Boston soccer fans think of prominent local figures, few garner more respect than former US women’s national team midfielder Sam Mewis.

BOS Nation FC revealed its team name and colors on Tuesday with a marketing campaign that featured the slogan “Too Many Balls.”

Boston’s NWSL expansion team unveiled its new name and branding on Tuesday to a slew of mixed reviews, including one from Mass. native and recently retired USWNT midfielder Samantha Mewis.

The National Women's Soccer League's newest team, Boston-based BOS Nation, apologized Wednesday after its name reveal and brand campaign launch garnered criticism online.

We fully acknowledge that the content of the campaign did not reflect the safe and welcoming environment we strive to create for all,” the team said.

"I think this is a great opportunity for the club, and for all of us, to learn and grow and try again, which — as I've said before — I hope we are all given the grace to do when we make a mistake."
