Officials in Roswell, New Mexico, were asking people to remain off the streets on Sunday after one person died as a result of extreme flooding.

Roswell, N.M., set a new daily rainfall record, shocking many residents who were trapped in their cars in floodwaters.

The New Mexico National Guard continued search and rescue operations Sunday in Roswell after record rainfall resulted in severe flooding in and around the city and Chaves County and left at least one person dead.

At least one person has died and hundreds have been rescued in Roswell, New Mexico, after extreme overnight rainfall brought severe flooding, stranding motorists and sweeping away cars.

Roswell, N.M., received nearly a third of its annual rainfall total in just a few hours on Sunday. Rescue efforts were ongoing with more storms in the forecast.

Authorities have rescued 290 people, and 38 were taken to local hospitals, according to the New Mexico National Guard.

Floodwaters have also entered homes and other buildings, according to Roswell officials. "Flooding-response efforts continue, and some areas remain dangerous," the city said in a social media post.

Flooding in New Mexico caused by heavy rainfall over the weekend killed two people, according to officials and authorities, who said hundreds of rescues were performed over Sunday.

Record rainfall produced severe flooding in and around Roswell and Chaves County. Water levels had receded in many parts of the city but remained high in the downtown area.
