A fter savaging Jamaica as one of the most powerful hurricanes on record, swamping Haiti, Cuba and the Bahamas and skirting Bermuda, Hurricane Melissa is rapidly speeding out into the Atlantic and is expected to drop down into an extratropical cyclone later today, according to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center.
The most powerful storm to hit the region since 1988 could inundate some areas of eastern Jamaica with up to 40 inches of rain. The arrival of its core has been delayed by stalling.
In July 2024, Hurricane Beryl’s outer bands battered Jamaica’s southern coast. The seaside communities of the southern parishes of Clarendon, Manchester and St. Elizabeth were the worst affected, and many were still picking up the pieces when Hurricane Melissa struck.
