While precipitation is expected across some parts of the country, other areas of the United States could see ongoing drought conditions continue.

When La Niña is in effect, wetter than usual conditions are common in the Great Lakes region during winter. There is a 60% chance for a weak and short duration La Niña to emerge between September and November and persist into January to March, according to the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center.

The winter temperature outlook is favoring equal chances of above or below temperatures for the upper Midwest. The biggest impacts from La Nina will be seen in the southern and far northeastern portions of the country.
