The amber alert is in place between 9am and 11.59pm on Sunday, October 20, for two UK regions: Strathclyde, and the Highland and Eilean Siar, both in Scotland. Meanwhile less severe yellow weather warnings are in place for many other parts of the country.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for rain in Northern Ireland, North West England, South West England, the West Midlands and Wales. The alerts follows previous forecasts predicting that midweek temperatures could exceed 20C in many regions.

Much of the country will have a windy end to the weekend, but temperatures over the coming days are expected to be warmer than average.

Storm Ashley is set to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the UK on Sunday. Named by Ireland's Met Éireann on Friday morning, the storm has the potential to cause transport disruption, damage to buildings and power cuts.
