A northern Kentucky man died after a rabies infection. He is the first human to die from rabies in nearly 30 years, according to state health officials on Friday. They said the source of the man's rabies exposure has not been identified and the man may have gotten the virus outside the U.

The animal that infected him has not been identified, though, it's possible he was infected while traveling internationally.

Kentucky health officials announced in a press release that the Northern Kentucky resident may have been exposed to the virus outside of the U.S., but the source is still unidentified.

In a news release, the Kentucky Cabinet of Health and Family Services said that before Friday’s death, the last Kentucky resident with a confirmed rabies infection was in 1996.

Officials said a person who has not been identified was exposed to rabies and received medical treatment in Kentucky and Ohio before dying.
