Returning NXT Star Dethrones WWE US Champ Sami Zayn On SmackDown
Ilja Dragunov marked his return to the ring by dethroning Sami Zayn for the United States Championship during "WWE SmackDown." Dragunov had been out of action since last September before returning as the seventh challenger for Zayn's title, with the champion having held a weekly open challenge since dethroning Solo Sikoa at the end of August.
Zayn has held an open challenge throughout the course of his run as United States Champion and has faced both veteran stars and upcoming talent. John Cena, Rey Fenix, Carmelo Hayes, Je'Von Evans, Aleister Black, and Shinsuke Nakamura all answered the Canadian's call but fell short for differing reasons.
