The U.S. State Department has issued an updated warning for the more than 13 million Americans who visit Mexico each year.

“Most homicides are targeted assassinations against members of criminal organizations,” the state department warned.

Chiapas is also home to the Zapatista rebels, who staged an armed uprising in 1994. While "rebels" and "drug smugglers" sound scary, they don't normally affect travelers.
