PARIS, May 5 - President Emmanuel Macron plans to nominate his former chief of staff, Emmanuel Moulin, as France's next central bank governor, the Elysee said on Tuesday, seizing an early vacancy to install a trusted ally ahead of a 2027 election the far right could win.
Macron and Trump first met in 2017 at a Nato summit in Brussels during the American leader’s first term in power, which he began in much the same way as his current one: by accusing the “obsolete” alliance of taking advantage of the US.
The leader of France's conservatives was the interior minister for a year under Emmanuel Macron. Now, as a presidential candidate, he is looking to distance himself from the president.
Opposition parties argue that Emmanuel Moulin would not act independently, given his proximity to current and past governments.
