Timeline: New Year's Day storm brings heavy rain to Southern California
National Weather Service forecasters predict total rainfall of 1-2 inches in coastal and valley areas, with 2-5 inches in the foothills and mountains. Rainfall rates could reach an inch per hour in some local areas. A flood watch is currently in effect for areas south of Point Conception, including much of Los Angeles and Orange counties.
Big rain is poised to renew flash flooding in Northern California in the coming days. As freezing levels plunge and feet of snow pile up in the high country, travel over Donner Pass, California, may shut down.

Evacuation warnings and flash flood watches will be in effect as Southern California closes out 2025 and a wet December that has one more storm in store. The most significant rainfall from the storm that arrived on New Year’s Eve is expected overnight into Thursday as many are celebrating the start of the new year.
