The Alaska House has voted to urge President Donald Trump to reverse course and retain the name of North America’s tallest peak as Denali
The tallest mountain in the United States has been officially reverted to Mount McKinley, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced in a press release Friday. The official action comes four days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on his first day back in office that also changes the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
JUNEAU — Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy said Wednesday that he would seek out a conversation with President Donald Trump about his decision to rename Denali, the tallest mountain in the U.S. Trump ordered on Monday to change the name of the peak to Mount McKinley.
The Alaska House voted 28-10 to adopt a resolution signaling their opposition to changing the name of North America’s tallest peak.
Dunleavy offered no opinion on Trump's decision to rename Denali as Mount McKinley, saying he wanted to speak with the president before sharing his own view.
In 2015, the name of the peak was changed during the Obama administration to reflect the traditions of Alaska Natives and preference of many Alaskans.
