Newark also isn’t alone when it comes to major transformations. An extensive project at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is also underway, which will eventually debut a brand-new Terminal 1, a new Terminal 6 (which will connect to Terminal 5), an expanded Terminal 4, and a revamped Terminal 8.

The plan, announced Thursday by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, includes replacing the rickety AirTrain network and the airport’s dilapidated Terminal B.

In the next 40 years, a new Terminal B and a rebuilt taxiway to handle more planes are priorities at Newark Liberty International Airport.

“The Vision Plan provides a roadmap to reimagine Newark Liberty International Airport as a world-class facility,” said Jacquelene McCarthy, Port Authority director of aviation redevelopment. “Our goal is to enhance passenger experiences, improve operational efficiency, and ensure that the airport reflects the culture and diversity of New Jersey.”

Newark Liberty International Airport is vying for a five-star rating as it undertakes a massive redevelopment, an expansion to accommodate passenger growth. At a news conference revealing plans, Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole said,

Newark Liberty International Airport is embarking on a major overhaul of its terminals, air train and parking facilities, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced on Thursday.

The plan is a long-term strategy by the Port Authority to accommodate passenger growth at Newark Airport and align the experience with NYC's other airports.
