Back when Sousa was the march king, every newspaper had a march of its own.

"The Washington Post March" (1889) is, second to "Stars and Stripes Forever," the most popular march in the world — certainly among the classics written by "march king" John Philip Sousa.

This patriotic American march is considered to be some of the best work composed by Sousa. In his autobiography, Sousa wrote that he composed the song on Christmas Day 1896.

Though Sousa composed 17 light operas (only “El Capitan” gets regularly revived these days) plus books, concert pieces and songs, it’s the marches – 136 of them – that distinguish him.

Another Sousa composition, “Liberty Bell March,” is also on the program. The Kotzschmar Organ in Portland will be played for a live audience Saturday for the first time since 2019.
