New Hurricanes defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman matched what Mario Cristobal was looking for in a new assistant coach.

Despite signing a contract extension in December with a significant pay raise, Hetherman opted to head to Miami for presumably an even bigger pay raise. The Hurricanes program is on a different level than Minnesota, claiming five national titles since the Gophers won their last in 1960.

Despite signing a contract extension with Minnesota in December, Gophers defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman is expected to take the same role at Miami, according to a report from 247Sports' Matt Zenitz on Saturday. According to Zenitz, Hetherman was a "leading figure" in Miami’s search and the deal crossed the finish line within an hour.

Minnesota previously had offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca go to Rutgers in 2022 and defensive coordinator Joe Rossi leave for Michigan State in 2023. With Hetherman, all three will have earned significant pay raises in their new jobs.

The Miami Hurricanes defense struggled heavily last season, and as a result, coordinator Lance Guidry was let go in December. In his place, Minnesota defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman will step in to try and fix the defense.
