The M23 advance on North Kivu capital Goma, first reported last week, saw the United Nations (UN) mission in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) activate a quick reaction force (QRF), two battalions, a Special Forces platoon and an artillery battery to counter the offensive.

The North Kivu Region with its capital city and gatway of Goma has many tourist favorite. This region has been turning into a battlefield after new attack by the M23 group.
M23 rebels stormed the city and announced its 'liberation', as the UN has called for the rebels to 'cease all hostilities'
