CenterPoint previously reported the proposed rate increase would have added about $1.25 per month the the average residential bill for customers using 1,000 kWh.

Xcel Energy, Minnesota's biggest electricity provider, requested a 9.6% rate increase in 2025, which would go up from its current interim rate of 5.2%. The company also proposed a 3.6% increase for 2026. The PUC will make a decision regarding CenterPoint's proposal by July 1.

The electricity supplier for much of the Houston region wants to make additional investments to “reliably deliver power.” This type of denial by Houston City Council is “not uncommon,” according to the city’s administration and regulatory affairs department.
