CHAVES COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) — Intense flooding hit Chaves County on Saturday, leaving residents trapped or stuck. The New Mexico National Guard deployed help to the area, announcing they had rescued 309 people since the flooding began. They also stated that 38 people were hospitalized.

During the flood emergency, the Chaves County Sheriff was swept away in his police unit and had to evacuate onto the roof of the vehicle. In a video posted to social media, the sheriff showed several vehicles stranded in water and the water up to the windows on his truck.
