Detroit City Council President garnered 53.8% of the vote in early returns. The second top vote-getter had yet to be decided as of 9:50 p.m.

The polls are closed and Detroit's mayoral race for the primary is officially underway. Two candidates will move on to the November general election.

With Mayor Mike Duggan not running for a fourth term, Detroit is set to elect its first new mayor in 12 years. While the open primary is officially nonpartisan, the leading candidates include several Democrats and one Republican. Read more
