A Kolkata sessions court has sentenced Sanjoy Roy to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had advocated for the death penalty, a stance supported by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

In a detailed judgment spanning 172 pages, Judge Anirban Das of a Kolkata court sentenced Sanjoy Roy, the convict in the RG Kar rape-murder case, to life imprisonment instead of the death penalty. The decision reflects the judicial system's adherence to balancing the

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed discontent over the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case and said, "We had demanded capital punishment for the accused. We have ensured the death penalty in cases where the state conducted the trial. The case was taken away from us and given to CBI."

Sanjay Roy received a life sentence for the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College in 2024. Despite public outcry and protests demanding a death penalty, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

During the proceedings, the CBI lawyer described the crime as heinous and urged the court to impose the death penalty to uphold public trust in the justice system.
