Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is about 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town. The island was formerly owned by an Arab who used it for the confinement of refractory slaves, but no prisoners were ever properly housed there; instead, the island became a quarantine station for the yellow fever epidemic.

Changuu Island (also known as Kibandiko, Prison or Quarantine Island) (Kisiwa cha Changuu, in Swahili) is an island in the Mjini Magharibi Region, Tanzania, off the coast of Mjini District. It is situated in the Zanzibar Channel. It is located 5.6 km (3.5 mi) northwest of Stone Town.

Prison Island is one of the most advertised locations in Zanzibar and present in the excursion programs of the island's tour operators. We were staying in the IGV village in Dongwe (splendid and highly recommended....) and we visited Prison Island as part of an excursion that also included the island of Nakupenda (not to be missed....).

The Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island which is located on the western part of Zanzibar Island, just off Stone Town and bordering three islands namely Grave Island, Snake Island and Bawe Island. It takes around 25 minutes by local boat riding from the Stone Town beach.
