The young tripod fish is never safe. They swim with flowing fins at the ocean’s surface, hunted by fish and squid and jellyfish. To survive, they seek the shelter of darkness: descending into the depths. As they sink, their eyes slowly degrade and collapse into pits, and their flowing fins sharpen into boney blades to passively sense and ambush prey. They lose their beauty, but in the dark it doesn’t matter anyway. They survived. And they are now the elders for the next generation of tripod fish
